About Facebook Reels
How Facebook Reels work
Facebook Reels sit in a different part of Facebook from ordinary video posts, and their links look different too. The distinction matters because Facebook's privacy model is per-post: a Reel shared publicly is reachable, while one limited to Friends is not, and the two are indistinguishable from the outside until you try.
Step by step
Saving Facebook Reels
-
01
Open the Reel on its own page
Tap the Reel so it fills the screen rather than scrolling past it in the feed. Feed URLs often point at the feed position, not the video.
-
02
Copy the link
Use the three-dot menu and choose Copy link. You should get something containing
/reel/or afb.watchshort link — both work. -
03
Paste and download
If the Reel is public it resolves in a few seconds. If it is friends-only, no tool can reach it, and you will get a clear message rather than a silent failure.
Formats
What you get
| Quality | Format | Audio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p | MP4 | Included | Reels uploaded from a recent phone |
| 720p | MP4 | Included | The usual fallback, and common on older posts |
| Audio only | MP3 | Audio only | Useful when you only want the soundtrack |
Public visibility is what decides this, not whether you personally can see the Reel while logged in. If it requires an account to view, it cannot be downloaded here.
Common questions
Facebook Reels questions
Almost always because the Reel is not public. Open it in a private browser window while signed out — if you cannot watch it there, GripVid cannot reach it either, because it is in exactly that position.
Reels are short and vertical and live in their own feed; regular Facebook videos can be any length or shape and sit in the timeline. Both download here, but their links differ, so use the Reel's own link for a Reel.
No. Group content requires membership and an authenticated session, and GripVid downloads only what is publicly reachable.
Yes. Short fb.watch links are expanded to the full URL automatically, so you can paste whichever form Facebook gave you.

Downloading a video you do not own is only lawful in limited circumstances — your own uploads, material published under a licence that permits it, or personal offline viewing where your local law allows. Redistributing someone else’s work is not one of them.
