About Twitter GIFs
How Twitter GIFs work
Twitter GIFs are not GIFs. When you attach a GIF to a tweet, Twitter converts it to a silent looping MP4 and throws the original away, because MP4 is dramatically smaller for the same motion. Everything you download here reflects that: you get the MP4 Twitter actually stores, which loops the same way and carries no audio track because none was ever created.
Step by step
Saving Twitter GIFs
-
01
Open the tweet containing the GIF
Click through to the tweet itself rather than copying from the timeline, so the URL points at that specific post.
-
02
Copy the tweet link
Use Share → Copy link. Both
x.comandtwitter.comaddresses work, as do links carrying tracking parameters. -
03
Paste and save the MP4
The result is a short, silent, looping MP4. If you specifically need an animated
.giffile, convert the MP4 afterwards with a separate converter.
Formats
What you get
| Quality | Format | Audio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original | MP4 | None | Silent by design — Twitter GIFs never carry audio |
| 720p | MP4 | None | Larger GIFs, where Twitter stored a higher resolution |
| Small | MP4 | None | Short reaction GIFs, often only a few hundred kilobytes |
Because the source is an MP4, the file loops in most players but will not autoplay silently everywhere a real GIF would — messaging apps in particular sometimes treat the two differently.
Common questions
Twitter GIFs questions
Because that is genuinely what Twitter has. The moment a GIF is uploaded, Twitter transcodes it to MP4 and discards the original. Handing you an MP4 is giving you the real file rather than re-generating a lossy GIF from it.
Yes, with any MP4-to-GIF converter. Expect the .gif to be several times larger than the MP4 for the same few seconds — that size difference is exactly why Twitter switched.
Twitter GIFs are stored without an audio track. If the tweet you want has sound, it is a normal video rather than a GIF, and the main Twitter downloader page handles it.
Yes. The two domains serve the same content and both link formats are accepted, including old mobile.twitter.com addresses.
Before you download
Downloading a video you do not own is only lawful in limited circumstances — your own uploads, material published under a licence that permits it, or personal offline viewing where your local law allows. Redistributing someone else’s work is not one of them.
